HEIC vs JPG: Which Photo Copy Should You Keep?

HEIC and JPG can represent the same scene while serving different workflows. Keep the camera original for your library, and make a JPG delivery copy when the receiving application requires it. Changing the extension alone is not a conversion.

Storage and compatibility are separate decisions

Apple uses HEIF for high-efficiency image capture on supported devices. A recipient may still ask for JPEG. Do not assume that the most compact source is the most convenient delivery format: first check what the form, editor or recipient actually accepts.

Conversion changes more than the filename

FormatPlease decodes the HEIC into pixels and encodes a new JPEG at your chosen quality. A high quality setting does not promise identical pixels, and the result can be larger than the HEIC. Compare texture and gradients before keeping a delivery copy.

Keep the original for photo-library features

This browser export does not copy original camera metadata, GPS fields, Live Photo motion or editing history. It also does not promise preservation of original HDR, bit depth or embedded profiles. A successfully opened JPG is not proof that the entire camera record survived.

A practical choice for each task

For a JPEG-only upload, make a JPG from the original and inspect it. For a PNG-only editing workflow, export PNG without expecting restored detail or a smaller file. For long-term retention, keep the original HEIC alongside any necessary delivery copies rather than replacing it after conversion.
