One M4A at a time. This device’s input limit: 256.0 MiB. Complex files may still exceed browser memory. Encrypted files are unsupported.

Auto keeps 48 kHz sources; other rates are resampled to 44.1 kHz. Surround audio uses FFmpeg’s channel-layout downmix.

MP3 is lossy. AAC → MP3 re-encodes audio; a higher bitrate cannot restore lost detail. The output is not guaranteed to be smaller than the source. ALAC → MP3 loses lossless fidelity.

How to Convert M4A to MP3

  1. Drop one M4A or choose a file. Wait for its actual codec, duration, sample rate and channels to appear.
  2. Choose 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps. Standard 192 kbps is the default. Advanced settings control sample rate and channels.
  3. Select Convert to MP3. Progress follows the encoder’s processed audio time; validation completes before the result is offered.
  4. Preview the audio and download your separate MP3. Your original recording stays unchanged.

What Is an M4A File?

M4A is an audio-oriented filename extension for an MPEG-4 container. Inside it, AAC usually stores compressed audio while ALAC stores losslessly compressed audio. The extension alone does not identify the codec or prove that a file is valid.

M4A vs MP3

M4A describes the container; MP3 uses MPEG Layer III audio. Converting creates new MP3 audio bytes, rather than changing a filename or putting AAC inside a misleading MP3 file. Check the receiving player or upload service’s requirements before choosing a delivery format.

Does M4A to MP3 Reduce Audio Quality?

AAC → MP3 decodes and re-encodes a lossy source and can introduce further loss. ALAC → MP3 discards the source’s lossless property. Higher bitrate cannot recover detail lost in the original. Keep the M4A as your master copy, and compare speech or music in the exported MP3 before sharing it.

How to Convert iPhone Voice Recordings to MP3

Export or save a recording from Voice Memos to Files, then choose that saved M4A here. If it contains supported AAC-LC or ALAC audio, detection enables conversion. Recording settings can change the codec or channel layout, so this tool does not promise support for every iPhone recording. DRM-protected media is not supported.

Is M4A to MP3 Conversion Private?

The source is read into a local worker. Detection, MP3 encoding and complete output decoding run on your device. Filenames never become engine paths or command arguments. Advertising and optional anonymous analytics do not receive audio data or detected metadata from this tool. Verify local processing in your browser.

Supported M4A Audio Codecs

This tool accepts unencrypted, audio-only MPEG-4 containers with AAC-LC or ALAC, one or two channels and a known duration. Video tracks, unsupported AAC profiles, other codecs, damaged containers and encrypted sample entries are rejected. Artwork and original tags are omitted. Use MP4 to MP3 for supported video files; use Audio Converter for WAV, FLAC, Ogg, MP3 and AIFF conversions.

Device limits and output checks

The desktop input cap is 256 MiB, reduced to 128 MiB for devices reporting at most 4 GB RAM, 64 MiB on mobile, or 32 MiB for devices reporting at most 2 GB RAM. Output caps range from 16 to 128 MiB. The workspace shows your device’s input cap. Files within these limits can still exhaust available memory; try a smaller or shorter recording.

MP3 output is checked for codec, bitrate, sample rate, channels and duration, then decoded completely before download. Encoder delay and padding can slightly change duration. Conversion does not preserve tags, chapters or cover art, and the MP3 may be larger than the M4A. Only convert recordings you have the right to use.

The tool reuses the existing FFmpeg WebAssembly core and LAME encoder, licenses and corresponding source. No additional codec binary or conversion service is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which M4A files can I convert?

Use unencrypted audio-only M4A containing mono or stereo AAC-LC or ALAC. The tool checks the container and detected codec, not just the filename. Other AAC profiles, DRM, video tracks and unsupported codecs are rejected. Embedded cover artwork is omitted from the MP3.

What does Auto do for sample rate and channels?

Auto keeps 48 kHz sources at 48 kHz and resamples other rates to 44.1 kHz for the MP3 encoder. Mono remains mono and stereo remains stereo. You can choose 44.1 or 48 kHz and Mono or Stereo explicitly.

Will a higher bitrate improve my recording?

A higher MP3 bitrate can reduce additional encoding loss but cannot restore missing detail. AAC to MP3 is another lossy encoding stage. Converting ALAC to MP3 loses its lossless property. Keep the original recording.

Are my recordings or filenames uploaded?

No. Detection, conversion and full MP3 validation run in a local browser worker. The existing media engine downloads from this site when needed. Advertising and optional anonymous usage events are separate and do not receive your recording, filename or audio metadata from this tool.

Can I cancel or convert another recording?

Cancel Conversion stops the worker and releases its WebAssembly memory. You can retry. Replace File, Remove File and Convert Another File clear the previous result. Preview and download links are released when their result is cleared or the workspace unmounts.

Why was a file below the size limit rejected?

File size is only one safety check. Damaged packets, unknown duration, encryption, unsupported codecs or insufficient browser memory can prevent conversion. No download is offered unless the MP3 codec, bitrate, sample rate, channels, duration and complete decoding pass validation.
