Learn about PDF limits

Up to 64 MB and 50 pages on this device. Pixel and document memory budgets may impose stricter limits.

How to Compress a Scanned PDF

  1. Choose one unencrypted PDF. Wait for local document analysis; text, OCR, interactive features and uncertain pages prevent conversion.

  2. Review the analysis and explicitly confirm that creating a new image-only PDF can discard original structures.

  3. Choose a compression preset or PPI, JPEG quality and color mode. Preview relevant pages side by side and zoom to inspect small text.

  4. Compress all pages locally. Review verified page geometry and actual output bytes, then download your copy or try different settings.

Processing happens locally in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. Google advertising makes separate requests. See how to verify local processing.

Why Scanned PDFs Are Large

A scan stores a photograph of each page. High pixel counts, color noise and lightly compressed images can dominate the file size. Already optimized scans may become larger after another encoding pass.

PDF Compression vs Image Compression

This workflow analyzes each document before rendering supported scan pages and encoding them as JPEG images in a new PDF. It does not optimize arbitrary PDF objects or preserve editable structures. No page is silently omitted.

Before Compressing a Scan for an Upload Form

Check whether the recipient needs selectable text, a valid signature or an archival original. This compressor creates a new image-only copy, so keep the original and use it only for eligible scans. If the upload limit is strict, compare the complete downloaded PDF's byte count with that limit; a smaller preview image is not proof that the document will fit.

Need fewer pages instead? Extract the required PDF pageswithout treating the whole document as a scan. To join documents, useMerge PDF. For selectable text, usePDF to Text; none of these tools adds OCR to a scan.

Choosing Resolution and Quality

PPI determines output pixels per inch; JPEG quality determines lossy image encoding. Lower PPI can erase tiny print and fine table lines. Compare before and after at zoom, using the same settings as the final output. Preview page JPEG bytes exclude PDF overhead; the complete size is measured only after compression.

Scanned PDF vs Text-based PDF

A page with image painting and no detected text or interactive structures may be a scan. No extracted text alone is not proof. Vector paths, masks, unfamiliar painting instructions and small isolated images produce Unknown / Review Required and remain blocked in this release. Mixed documents are not partially converted.

Does Compression Remove OCR Text?

Raster rebuilding can remove an invisible OCR layer along with links, forms, annotations, bookmarks, signatures and special metadata. This tool blocks detected text operators, interactive structures and signed PDFs. It performs no OCR and does not restore those features. Explicit consent is required even for likely scans.

Privacy

The original PDF stays unchanged on your device. Browser workers process one page at a time, clean temporary canvases and image bitmaps, and release their parsers. Cancellation stops local work. Filenames, scan images and extracted content are neither uploaded nor recorded in analytics.

Compress Scanned PDF: common questions

Can I compress any PDF without losing quality?

No. This first version is for likely image-only scans and uses lossy JPEG re-encoding. Text-based, OCR, interactive, signed and unclassified documents are blocked. It is neither a general PDF optimizer nor lossless compression.

Does compression remove OCR text?

Raster rebuilding would remove an OCR layer, so PDFs with detected text operators or selectable text are blocked. No OCR reconstruction is performed. Empty text extraction alone is not proof of a pure scan.

What resolution should I use?

High Compression starts at 100 PPI and 50% JPEG quality, Balanced at 150 PPI and 70%, and High Quality at 200 PPI and 85%. Advanced settings allow 72–300 PPI and 10–95% quality. Inspect small print and fine lines before downloading.

What happens if the result is larger?

The result displays No Size Reduction Achieved with actual bytes, not a success claim. Optimized sources can grow after raster rebuilding. You may download the verified result or try lower PPI and quality.

Will links, forms, bookmarks and metadata be preserved?

No. This creates new image-only pages and does not preserve editable PDF structures, signatures or special metadata. Detectable important structures are blocked. Classification is a conservative heuristic; explicit consent and manual review are still required.

Are my scanned documents uploaded?

No. Parsing, image rendering, JPEG encoding and PDF creation run in local browser workers. No PDF, scan image, file name or document text is sent to analytics or stored on a server.

What are the limits?

The existing limits are 64 MB and 50 pages, with stricter device-dependent file, pixel and memory limits. Pages are processed sequentially. Large embedded source images may need smaller source scans; lowering output PPI does not reduce their decoding memory.

Is this JBIG2 or black-and-white document compression?

No. The tool offers color and grayscale JPEG images only. It does not include JBIG2, adaptive thresholding, OCR or a cloud PDF API.
