How to Convert MP4 to MP3
Drop or browse for one MP4. Check its detected audio codec, duration, channels and sample rate.
Choose MP3 quality: 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps. The default is 192 kbps. Advanced settings offer sample rate and channels.
Select Convert to MP3. Follow the local engine stages, or cancel to stop the worker.
Preview the verified MP3 and download a separate audio file. The original MP4 is unchanged.
How to Extract Audio from Video
The converter selects one supported audio stream, decodes it and encodes MP3 with the existing LAME encoder inside FFmpeg. It excludes video, subtitles and data streams. Multiple audio tracks have a selector; they are not combined. The full exported MP3 is decoded again before a download becomes available.
MP4 vs MP3
MP4 is a media container that can hold video, sound and other tracks. MP3 is an audio encoding and file format. Renaming an MP4 or copying AAC packets does not create MP3. This tool produces actual MPEG Layer III audio and removes source tags, chapters and artwork.
Does MP4 to MP3 Reduce Audio Quality?
MP3 is lossy. AAC → MP3 introduces another lossy encoding stage. Higher bitrate can retain more detail during that stage but cannot restore missing detail. 128 kbps favors size, while 256 and 320 kbps use more space. The MP3 is not guaranteed smaller than its source video, especially for a low-bitrate or mostly silent video. Encoder delay and padding can slightly change duration.
Can I Extract Audio Without Uploading?
Yes. The browser downloads the same FFmpeg core already used by Video Converter, then runs it in a disposable worker. No server receives the MP4 or processes its sound. Cancel terminates the worker; replacing or removing a file releases its preview. Verify local processing.
Supported Video Audio Codecs
This release tests AAC, MP3, ALAC and AC-3 audio in unencrypted MP4. Other codecs, DRM, malformed boxes and incomplete audio are rejected. MOV, MKV and WebM are future extensions for this tool. Video encoding does not become an output requirement: tested H.264 and HEVC inputs, including a 4K fixture, export only sound.
Browser Memory and Large Files
The virtual filesystem still holds the source video, even though its frames are not encoded. This tool adds conservative device caps below the existing engine’s strict 2 GiB boundary. Limits and actual memory availability differ: a file within the cap can still fail. Output size is estimated before encoding; no complete decoded PCM file or video-frame buffer is created by this tool.
FFmpeg licenses, source archives and build information remain available. No additional codec binary or font download is needed.
