BMP to PNG, explained
Convert a BMP bitmap to PNG for screenshots, diagrams and other graphics that benefit from lossless raster delivery. At Original size, the picture keeps its decoded dimensions without introducing JPEG compression. Advanced Settings also offers optional resize.
Select BMP files and confirm that the preview matches the original.
Keep PNG selected; no quality percentage is required.
Convert and compare dimensions and size before downloading.
A useful destination for legacy screenshots
Older applications sometimes save screenshots as BMP. PNG provides a compressed raster container without a JPEG-style quality tradeoff, which suits text and flat-color graphics. It does not clean up an already degraded screenshot.
BMP variants still need a decoder
The browser reads BMP input. A legacy or specialized bitmap variant may be unsupported despite a recognizable filename. If it fails, export a PNG directly from the application that created or can open it.
No new background transparency
Changing a bitmap to PNG does not identify a background. Only alpha exposed by decoding can be retained. If your bitmap looks opaque, the output will not become a cutout simply because PNG supports transparency.
Same pixels, different storage
At Original size, the decoded width and height remain unchanged. Advanced Settings offers optional resize. PNG may save space compared with a large bitmap, but there is no fixed saving. Inspect the reported size rather than assuming every BMP is uncompressed.
Retain unusual source information
This export does not copy original metadata, palette organization or print settings as an archival record. Preserve the BMP if a legacy application depends on its exact representation. The new file is intended for ordinary raster use.
