Numbering

0 of 0 pages will be numbered. Pages follow document order; duplicates are numbered once. Skip First Page always excludes physical page 1. The fraction denominator counts numbered pages; Starting Number changes only the numerator.

Signed or certified PDFs are rejected because editing invalidates signatures. Forms, bookmarks, tags, annotations and special document structures are not guaranteed; review your downloaded copy.

Preview renders the same PDF that Apply makes available for download. Changing a setting clears the previous preview and download.

Processing happens locally in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

Originals untouched. Verify local processing. Advertising makes separate network requests.

How to Add Page Numbers to PDF

  1. Upload one unencrypted, unsigned PDF. Check its file size, page count and original page preview.

  2. Choose a position, numbering style, starting number and page range. Adjust font size, text color and margins.

  3. Select Preview Page Numbers and inspect the numbered pages with the page selector.

  4. Apply Page Numbers, then download a separate numbered PDF. Your original file remains unchanged.

Choose Page Number Position

Place numbers at the top or bottom, aligned left, center or right. Placement follows each page’s visible area and rotation. Font width determines centering and right alignment. Preview each relevant page, especially in mixed-size documents.

Skip the First Page

Leave a cover page unnumbered by turning on Skip First Page. This always excludes physical page 1. Custom ranges such as 2-5,8,10 are checked against the document; repeated pages receive one number, in document order.

Customize Page Numbers

Choose plain numbers, Page 1 labels or a fraction. Starting Number is a positive integer; the fraction denominator counts only numbered pages. Choose 8–24 pt Helvetica, a text color and margins in points. If any selected page cannot contain the complete label, reduce the margin or font size before trying again.

Privacy & Local Processing

A local worker adds PDF text objects without rasterizing the original pages. Only the current preview page is rendered. Workers, canvases and temporary URLs are released when finished or cancelled. PDF content and file names are not sent to analytics. Signed PDFs are rejected because modification can invalidate signatures; review forms and other special structures in your downloaded copy.

BEFORE YOU START

Add Page Numbers to PDF: common questions

How does Skip First Page work?

It excludes physical page 1, even with a custom range. With Starting Number 1, the next selected page receives 1. Selected pages are numbered in document order, with duplicates counted once.

What does the total in 1 / 10 mean?

The denominator is the number of pages actually receiving a number, after applying the range and skipping the first page. Starting Number changes only the numerator. For example, selecting three pages and starting at 5 produces 5 / 3, 6 / 3 and 7 / 3.

Will my PDF become a picture?

No. Page numbers are added as PDF text objects. Existing selectable text, vectors and links are retained where supported. Forms, bookmarks, tags, annotations and special structures are not guaranteed; review the downloaded document.

Can I number a signed or password-protected PDF?

Encrypted PDFs and detectable digital signatures or certifications are rejected. Editing can invalidate signatures. Use an unsigned, unencrypted copy that you are authorized to edit; passwords are not bypassed.

Which pages and fonts are supported?

Mixed sizes, A4, Letter, portrait, landscape and rotations in 90-degree steps are supported. Number positions use the visible CropBox and MediaBox intersection. Helvetica supports the basic Latin numbering styles; custom non-Latin labels are not offered.

Are there file limits or uploads?

Processing stays in your browser, with no PDF upload. The limit is 64 MB and 50 pages, with stricter memory limits on some devices. Excessive margins or numbers that do not fit are rejected. File names and PDF content are not sent to analytics.
