How to Check Whether Text Is Still Selectable After Merging PDFs
Learn how to check whether text remains selectable and searchable after merging PDF files, and why scanned PDFs behave differently.

Open the downloaded merged PDF, select a sentence, copy it into a text editor, and search for a distinctive word with Ctrl+F or Cmd+F. FormatPlease copies PDF pages and their objects rather than turning each page into a screenshot. Existing page text can remain text, but a scan without a text layer will still be a scan.
The problem: the pages look right, but is the text usable?
A visual preview cannot tell you whether a document supports search or copying. A merged file may contain an exported report, a scanned signature page, and an OCR-processed letter. Each can look like ordinary text while behaving differently when selected.
Check a representative page from every source document. Testing the first page alone can miss image-only pages later in the file.
Why text and scanned pages behave differently
Real text versus a picture of text
A text-based PDF contains text objects alongside fonts and positioning information. A scanned page may contain only an image of the paper. Your eyes can read the image, but a PDF viewer needs text information to select words or find a phrase.
OCR can add a text layer to a scan. That layer may contain recognition mistakes even when the image looks perfect. Selectability, accurate copying, and accurate search are separate checks.
What FormatPlease’s merge actually does
The merge implementation uses pdf-lib to load each input, copy its pages with copyPages, and add them to a new PDF. It does not run the pages through the PDF-to-image converter or rasterize them before saving. Page previews are only previews; they are not the source of the exported pages.
This preserves page content as PDF objects rather than intentionally replacing text with pixels. It is not a promise that every document feature survives. Bookmarks, interactive forms, signatures, and document-level structure need separate attention.
How to merge files and retain a useful comparison
- Keep the original PDFs. Before merging, try selecting and searching a sentence in each one so you know what worked initially.
- Open Merge PDF and choose at least two PDFs. Wait for the file information to load.
- Arrange file rows with dragging or the up and down buttons. Files are merged from top to bottom; pages within each file keep their order.
- Check the displayed total page count. Press the Merge PDFs button, whose label includes the number of selected files, such as Merge 2 PDFs.
- Download
merged.pdfand open that downloaded file in a PDF viewer.
Try it with FormatPlease
Merge PDFs to combine the documents. If the pages inside a source need rearranging, organize them before merging or open the result in the page organizer afterward.
How to verify the result
- Select: drag across words on a page that had selectable text in the original. A rectangle around an entire image is not word selection.
- Copy: paste a short sentence into a plain-text editor. Check letters, spaces, and word order, especially in columns or tables.
- Search: use Ctrl+F on Windows/Linux or Cmd+F on macOS. Search for a distinctive word visible on that page, then check another source’s pages.
- Compare: repeat the same checks in the original PDF using the same viewer. This helps distinguish an existing source limitation from a change in the merged copy.
- Review pages: compare the total page count with the sum of the inputs. Check document boundaries, orientation, and order as well as text.
Limits and what to do when text cannot be selected
If the original also fails, it may be a scan without OCR, outlined lettering, or text with an unusable character mapping. FormatPlease does not currently add OCR text to scanned PDFs. Use an OCR-capable application for image-only documents, then verify its recognized text before merging again.
If the original works but the merged copy does not, try another PDF viewer and compare the pasted text. Keep the originals and report the difference instead of assuming the copy is suitable for submission.
The current safety limit is 50 pages per input PDF and 50 pages in the merged result. Byte and device-memory limits also apply. Password-protected or damaged inputs are rejected.
Selectable text alone does not prove accessibility. Reading order, tags, headings, form labels, and screen-reader behavior need separate validation; this page-copying workflow does not guarantee their preservation. Likewise, visually intact signature artwork does not establish a valid digital signature.
Put the comparison into practice
If the finished document needs a visible signature, sign and fill the PDF without printing, then reopen the exported copy before submitting it.
