What Is WebP? A Guide to Images Saved from the Web
WebP is an image format used for web delivery. A file downloaded from a website can be WebP even if you expected a JPG. Check the receiving application’s accepted formats before converting a file that already displays correctly.
The format has several capabilities
Google documents lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation in WebP. These are format capabilities; an individual file or converter need not use all of them. FormatPlease exports still WebP with a quality control and does not expose a dedicated lossless mode.
A file suffix is only a label
Changing .webp to .jpg does not re-encode the image. An editor still has to understand the underlying bytes. A real conversion reads those bytes, decodes the picture and writes the destination encoding. Keep the original if a conversion fails instead of repeatedly renaming it.
Choose JPG for compatibility or PNG for alpha
Use JPG for a destination that requires JPEG and can accept a white background. Use PNG when decoded transparency needs to survive, such as a cutout placed on different backgrounds. A PNG output does not remove an opaque background and may be larger than its WebP source.
Inspect motion and quality before replacing a file
An animated WebP becomes one still frame in this converter. A lossy source cannot gain missing detail merely by being saved as PNG, and another JPEG encode can introduce additional changes. Keep the original animation whenever motion is part of its purpose.
