Read image metadata

JPG, PNG and WEBP. Up to 64 MB and 24 megapixels on this device. Camera, photo and location data are read on your device.

Metadata is displayed automatically after you choose a file. A picture can have no EXIF yet contain XMP or text; those containers are listed when detected.

Originals untouched. Verify local processing. Advertising makes separate network requests.

How it works

  1. Select one JPG, PNG or WEBP to inspect its file details.

  2. Check the metadata categories and decoded EXIF fields, including location when present.

  3. Use Remove Metadata if you want a new sharing copy without the original EXIF, IPTC or XMP.

Image Metadata: common questions

Is file information the same as EXIF?

No. Filename, byte size, detected MIME type and displayed dimensions describe the selected file even when it has no EXIF. EXIF is embedded camera and photo information. XMP, IPTC and PNG text are other places an image can store descriptive data.

Can metadata prove when a photo was taken?

Not by itself. Camera clocks can be wrong, time zones can be absent, and metadata can be edited. Displayed dates are information recorded in the file, not independent evidence of authenticity or capture time.

Does inspection modify the picture?

No. Inspection reads the original locally and creates a small preview. It does not save changes, upload the image or add a map request. Choose another file or clear the list to discard the displayed information.
